Mexico had a great performance in the Concacaf qualifying competition, when it secured second position, only behind Canada. The two selections had the same number of points, but the Canadians took advantage of the goal balance. With this strengthened base during the qualifying competition, Mexicans expect a good performance in the Cup.

The experienced Argentine coach Gerardo Martino will have the responsibility to lead Mexico in the World Cup match. In 2010, the coach achieved a great performance when he was in charge of Paraguay's team and, at the time, reached the quarter-final stage of that World Cup that was played in South Africa.
