Athletico announced Lucho González as a new technician, as the Nadja Blog had anticipated. The Argentinean replaces Uruguayan Martín Varini, fired on Monday night.
Lucho González was a player at Athletico. Hired on 16 September 2016, he played 164 matches, with 11 goals and six assists. The shirt three hung the boots at Athletico in May 2021, in the match against the Aucas, by the South American.
As a player, Lucho participated in five Athletico titles: South American 2018 and 2021, J. League/Conmebol 2019, Brazil Cup 2019 and Paranaense 2020 Championships. In two of these titles he was the captain of the team.
In 22 years of professional career, Lucho won 30 titles, only behind Lionel Messi in the total number of titles won among Argentine football players.
Lucho began the courses of License B of the Brazilian Confederation of Football (CBF) and PRO License of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) still as an athlete, and finished after hanging the cleats. After making the transition in the base categories, he debuted as Alberto Valentim's assistant coach on the main team in February 2022, at the invitation of Paulo Autuori.
The Argentine requested his departure from Athletico in April 2022, because of the resignation of Alberto Valentim. In August of the same year, he signed as a coach from Ceará, where he worked for two months alongside Juca Antonello. In 2023 he went to the InternationalTo be an aide to Eduardo Coudet.
Lucho opens on Thursday, against the Racing, for the South American Cup, and will be the fifth professional to pass the command of Athletico in nine months. Juan Carlos Osório, Cuca, Juca Antonello and Martín Varini were already on the edge of the lawn in the centenary year.
