Fall of Athletico impacts the negotiation of Brazilian rights of 2025

The fall of Athletico-PR changed the framework of the negotiation of Brazilian rights of 2025. With the downgrading of the Paraná team, it changed the correlation of forces between the Libras and Liga Forte União groups. The LFU will have fewer matches available to sell next year compared to the current season of 2024.

From the defined series A and B, the Libra will have nine teams in the elite of the Brazilian, and the LFU, 11.

Libra has already sold its rights from Brazilian to Globo. The contract was initially R$ 1.3 billion for open and closed TV rights, plus pay-per-view participation. This figure suffered a 11% discount with the departure of Corinthians.

But the amount would have a further decrease of 10% in the case of a number less than nine Libra clubs. That's because there would be a smaller number of games. There was already an expectation of eight teams in the A Series. But actually, it'll be nine. In other words, Libra will gain a value of approximately R$ 1.16 billion.

The Strong Union League, in turn, is still in negotiation of part of their teams' games. A match has already been sold to Record and YouTube (CazeTV). And another game was negotiated with Amazon. None of these contracts will be affected by the fall of Athletico. The planned amount is R$ 700 million for these agreements.

But there were four games at the table in conversations with players. Only, in practice, there are now 3.5 games to be negotiated because 19 games have been lost. After all, there are 11 clubs and 55% of Brazilians.

The conversations about this Brazilian slice are still underway. Globo is interested and negotiates with the Union Strong League.

The smaller number of matches will impact the negotiation, but it is not clear to what extent. It is explained: the contract would be for a longer period, that is, there would be a variation in the number of games in each edition.

Therefore, the trend is that if there is a hit with Globo, there is a variation in the value of the contract depending on the number of clubs of LFU. But the model in which there will be this oscillation of values is not yet defined.

In the negotiations between Globo and LFU, the club group made a request considered very high by the station. After that, the two parties returned to the table with conversations at a lower level. There are others interested like Warner.

Less than four months before the start of the next Brazilian.
